How to Repair Your Credit Score

If you're looking for ways to repair credit score information, there are many companies out there that exist to help you do that. You may have seen the advertisements for these companies on television and wondered if they could help you. These credit repair companies can work with you to improve your credit, however everything they do, you can also do on your own. This is something to keep in mind, because many of these credit repair companies charge fees for their services. Rather than paying them, why not work on improving your credit yourself?

The first step is to find out what your credit score is. Ideally, you should obtain a copy of your full credit report in addition to your credit score from the three major credit bureaus. They are Trans Union, Experian and Equifax and they hold all the information that determines whether your credit rating is good, bad or somewhere in between. You will also hear your credit score referred to as your FICO score, and knowing where you rate is crucial. Most people's credit scores fall somewhere between 500 and 750. 750 is considered very good or even excellent. In general, a credit score of 600 would be moderately good, while anything under 500 would be considered bad.

Not only do credit grantors and lenders look at your numerical credit score, they also evaluate your credit report. So, it's important to go through your credit report and take care of any negative items. If you find mistakes on your credit report, write a letter to the credit bureau informing them. If you have documentation to support your claim, be sure to include it. Then, make arrangements to repay all your outstanding debt. Many bill collectors will be more than happy to work out an affordable installment plan.

After you've removed negative items from your credit report, it's time to start adding positive things. If you find that you are unable to obtain an unsecured credit card, you can certainly obtain a secured one. After six months to a year of timely payments, you may be able to get more credit privileges. You could also try to get a line of credit at a local retailer. Jewelry stores, furniture stores and department stores are all places where you may be able to obtain credit.

Once you've eliminated negative items from your credit report and established new credit, you should check your credit report and see if you've been able to repair your credit score. It may take some time, but if you stay vigilant and pay all your bills on time, you will see improvement. You are entitled to one free credit report annually from each credit bureau, so be sure to take advantage of that when you can.
